Our Story
Rooted in Arts, Growing in the World
Mithila Center USA is more than an organization — it is a living commitment to one of the oldest and most vibrant cultural traditions in South Asia. We exist to ensure that the art, language, rituals, and identity of the Mithila region thrive not just in their homeland, but across the global diaspora. This is the story of how we began, what we stand for, and where we are headed.
Where It All Began
Born from a Deep Love of Mithila Culture
Mithila Center USA was established to preserve, celebrate, and promote the rich arts of Mithila — the cultural region spanning parts of northern Bihar, India and the Terai of Nepal. Rooted in the traditions of Janakpur and the wider Mithila region, the organization was created to give Mithila culture a meaningful platform in the United States and beyond.
"Mithila culture is not a relic of the past — it is a living, breathing tradition that belongs to the world."
The founders recognized a significant gap: while the Mithila diaspora in the United States was growing, there was no institutional home to support its cultural life. Community events were scattered, traditional arts were fading, and younger generations were growing up without a meaningful connection to their heritage. Mithila Center USA was established to fill that gap — purposefully, professionally, and with deep respect for the traditions it represents.
Our Journey
Milestones Along the Way
From a community idea to a nationally recognized cultural organization, each step of our journey has been shaped by the passion of our community and the enduring power of Mithila arts.
-
Our Founding
Mithila Center USA was established as a registered nonprofit with a clear purpose: to create a lasting institutional home for Mithila arts in the diaspora. What began as a grassroots effort among passionate community members became a formal organization with a cultural mandate that has only deepened over the years.
-
Public Exhibitions
We organized Mithila art exhibitions, bringing original Madhubani paintings and traditional craft works to American audiences. The response was overwhelming — confirming the deep hunger for authentic South Asian cultural expression in public spaces.
-
Community Programming
We launched structured community programs — cultural workshops, arts classes, and storytelling sessions — for diaspora families. These programs helped Mithila families share their traditions with their children, many of whom had grown up outside the region with little access to their cultural roots.
-
International Partnerships
Mithila Center USA established partnerships with artists, institutions, cultural organizations, and public agencies across Bihar, India, the Terai region of Nepal, the United States, and Europe. Collaborations with the United Nations, the Nepal Embassy, various consulates, the NYC Mayor's Office, and international cultural partners fostered meaningful exchanges of knowledge, artwork, and expertise — strengthening the global Mithila network and deepening connections between diaspora communities and their cultural roots through arts.
-
Youth Engagement
Recognizing that the next generation holds the future of any living tradition, we launched dedicated youth initiatives — art workshops, cultural camps, and school outreach programs. These efforts ensure that young people of Mithila heritage, wherever they were born, can connect meaningfully with their roots.
-
National Expansion
From a single city presence, Mithila Center USA expanded its programs to serve communities across multiple states. Annual cultural festivals, traveling exhibitions, and digital programming brought the Mithila story to thousands of new audiences throughout the country.
-
The Museum Vision
We announced our most ambitious goal: the Museum of Mithila Heritage, New York — a permanent institutional space that will serve as a cultural home, educational resource, and international platform for Mithila art, artifacts, and living traditions for generations to come.
-
Growing and Looking Ahead
Today, Mithila Center USA continues to grow — engaging communities, supporting artists, advocating for cultural recognition, and working toward the realization of the Museum of Mithila Heritage. Our story is far from over. The best chapters are still being written.

Our Cultural Roots
The Ancient Art of Mithila
Mithila art — widely known as Madhubani painting — is one of the most distinctive and ancient folk art traditions in the world. Originating in the Mithila region of northern Bihar and the Terai of Nepal, this art form has been practiced for thousands of years, traditionally painted by women on the walls and floors of homes during ceremonies, festivals, and rites of passage.
Characterized by intricate geometric patterns, vibrant natural dyes, and themes drawn from mythology, nature, and daily life, Mithila art carries deep spiritual and social meaning. Each painting tells a story — of the cosmos, of family, of devotion, of identity. It is an art form that is inseparable from the culture that created it.
Beyond its visual beauty, Mithila culture encompasses a rich tradition of music, language (Maithili), literature, oral storytelling, and festivals. The culture is anchored in the sacred geography of Janakpur — birthplace of Sita and a major pilgrimage site — and it carries a spiritual legacy that stretches back to the age of the Ramayana.
Mithila Center USA was established to ensure this extraordinary art is not lost to time or distance — and that it continues to be celebrated, studied, and shared with the world.
What We Stand For
Three Pillars of Our Work
Everything Mithila Center USA does is guided by three core commitments: preserving what is precious, educating the next generation, and connecting communities across borders.
-
Preserve
We document, archive, and safeguard authentic Mithila traditions — from Madhubani paintings to oral histories, ritual practices, and Maithili language. Preservation is the foundation of everything else we do. Without it, the thread connecting past to future is broken.
-
Educate
Through workshops, school programs, exhibitions, and public events, we bring Mithila arts to new audiences and empower the next generation to understand and take pride in their cultural identity. Education is how culture lives on beyond memory.
-
Connect
We bridge the gap between diaspora communities in the United States and their homeland in India and Nepal. By fostering genuine human connections — between artists, families, institutions, and generations — we ensure that Mithila culture remains a living, shared experience, not a distant memory.
A Broader Movement
More Than an Organization
What began as a cultural initiative has grown into a broader movement that connects artists, families, youth, and communities across Nepal, India, and the diaspora.
Through exhibitions, festivals, workshops, and public programs, Mithila Center USA has helped bring Mithila arts into community spaces, civic venues, and international platforms.
The organization believes Mithila culture is a living tradition — expressed through art, rituals, storytelling, language, and collective identity. Its work is centered on preserving that legacy with authenticity while ensuring it remains relevant and accessible for future generations.
We have worked to use Mithila art as a platform for dialogue on global issues — sustainability, gender equality, education, and social responsibility. Mithila painting, with its roots in women's creative expression and its history of addressing social themes, is uniquely positioned to carry these conversations forward. It is both an ancient tradition and a contemporary voice.
Across every program and initiative, the guiding belief is the same: culture is not a luxury — it is essential. It gives communities their identity, their dignity, and their sense of belonging. Mithila Center USA exists to honor that truth and to act on it every day.
-
Living Tradition Mithila arts are not relics of the past — they are a breathing, evolving expression of community identity. We keep traditions alive by practicing them, teaching them, and sharing them with the world.
-
Artistic Excellence We champion the highest standards of Mithila artistry — elevating artists, preserving authentic techniques, and showcasing the extraordinary skill and vision embedded in every painting, every motif, every stroke.
-
Global Voice Mithila arts carry messages of nature, spirituality, and social justice that resonate across cultures. We use this ancient voice to engage global conversations on sustainability, equality, and human dignity.
-
Community First Every program, exhibition, and initiative begins with the community. We exist to serve the artists, families, and diaspora who are the living carriers of Mithila culture — their needs and voices shape everything we do.
Looking Ahead
The Next Chapter Begins Now
Our vision is to become a globally respected platform for Mithila arts — one that protects tradition, inspires learning, supports artists, and expands the global presence of Mithila culture. We envision a future where Mithila art and cultural knowledge are preserved with integrity, passed to future generations, and represented in public, educational, and international spaces with pride.
Central to this vision is the Museum of Mithila Heritage, New York — a permanent, world-class cultural institution that will serve as a home for the Mithila community and a bridge between South Asian heritage and the broader world. With your support, we can make this vision a reality.
