Our Purpose

Mission & Vision

Every organization is defined by what it stands for and where it is headed. At Mithila Center USA, our mission is the daily work of preservation, education, and community — and our vision is the future we are building together: a world in which Mithila heritage is honored, practiced, and celebrated by generations to come.

What We Are Here to Do

Our Mission

Mithila Center USA is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and advancing authentic Mithila heritage through art, education, cultural programming, and community engagement. We work to support artists, strengthen cultural identity, and create opportunities for younger generations to connect with their roots.

"We are committed to ensuring that the living traditions of Mithila — its art, language, music, and rituals — are not just remembered, but actively practiced and joyfully shared."

We are committed to creating spaces — physical and digital — where Mithila culture is not simply observed but truly lived. Through hands-on programs, artist support, community celebrations, and educational partnerships, we bring the traditions of Mithila into the everyday lives of our community members here in the United States and across the diaspora.

The organization also uses Mithila art as a platform for awareness and dialogue around global issues, including sustainability, education, equality, and social responsibility. Mithila painting — with its deep roots in women's creative expression and its history of addressing social themes — is uniquely positioned to carry these conversations forward into the modern world.

By supporting artists at home and abroad, fostering cultural pride among younger generations, and advocating for Mithila's rightful place on the world stage, we fulfill a commitment that is both deeply personal and universally important.

Our Work

How We Fulfill Our Mission

Our mission comes to life through four interconnected areas of work — each one essential, each one reinforcing the others.

  • Art & Culture

We curate exhibitions, festivals, and public showcases that bring authentic Mithila art — from traditional Madhubani painting to contemporary Mithila-inspired works — to audiences across the United States and internationally.

  • Education & Youth

Through school programs, workshops, cultural camps, and digital learning resources, we empower young people of Mithila heritage to understand, take pride in, and carry forward their cultural identity.

  • Community Engagement

We build meaningful connections among Mithila diaspora families, artists, and community leaders — creating a shared sense of belonging and collective responsibility for our cultural heritage.

  • Global Advocacy

We advocate for the recognition of Mithila culture on international platforms, collaborate with UNESCO and global institutions, and use Mithila art as a powerful voice in conversations about sustainability, equality, and human dignity.

Where We Are Headed

Our Vision

Our vision is to become a globally respected platform for Mithila heritage — one that protects tradition, inspires learning, supports artists, and expands the global presence of Mithila culture. We envision a future where Mithila art and cultural knowledge are preserved with integrity, passed to future generations, and represented in public, educational, and international spaces with pride.

We see a future where Mithila culture is taught in schools, displayed in world-class institutions, documented with scholarly rigor, and practiced with joy by communities in India, Nepal, and across the diaspora. We see a future where Mithila artists are recognized not as folk practitioners but as world-class creators whose work belongs in every major cultural conversation.

"We envision an institution — the Museum of Mithila Heritage — that will stand as permanent proof of what a culture can become when it is loved, preserved, and shared."

This vision requires long-term commitment, broad partnership, and sustained community support. It requires us to think not just in years but in generations — to make decisions today that will shape the cultural landscape for our children and grandchildren. That is the scale of the work we have committed ourselves to.

What Guides Us

Our Core Values

These six values are not aspirational statements — they are the principles that guide every decision we make, every program we run, and every relationship we build.

  • Authenticity

Everything we do honors the true traditions of Mithila. We refuse to dilute or commercialize the heritage we protect, and we always center the voices and expertise of Mithila artists and community elders.

  • Preservation

We are stewards of something ancient and irreplaceable. Our commitment to preservation means documenting, archiving, and actively safeguarding Mithila traditions so they are never lost to time or neglect.

  • Education

We believe cultural knowledge must be passed on, not just preserved in archives. Education — for youth, families, and the broader public — is how a living tradition stays alive across generations.

  • Inclusion

Mithila heritage belongs to everyone who loves it. We welcome all people — regardless of background, nationality, or prior knowledge — who wish to learn about, celebrate, and support this extraordinary culture.

  • Innovation

Tradition and innovation are not opposites — they are partners. We find new ways to share ancient practices: through digital platforms, contemporary art dialogue, cross-cultural partnerships, and creative programming.

  • Impact

We measure success not by the size of our events but by the depth of our impact: artists supported, youth inspired, families reconnected to their heritage, and a culture made more visible in the world.

Where We Make a Difference

Areas of Impact

Our mission and vision come to life across four key areas — each one representing a pillar of how Mithila Center USA creates lasting, meaningful change.

  • Supporting Mithila Artists

    Supporting Mithila Artists

We provide Mithila artists — in Bihar, Nepal, and the diaspora — with platforms, financial support, exhibition opportunities, and connections to broader audiences. By elevating artists, we ensure the art form thrives at its source.

  • Youth & Next Generation

    Youth & Next Generation

The future of Mithila culture depends on young people choosing to carry it forward. Our youth programs give the next generation not just knowledge about their heritage, but a personal, lived relationship with it — one built on creativity, pride, and connection.

  • Cultural Diplomacy

    Cultural Diplomacy

Mithila art deserves a seat at the world's cultural table. We work with international institutions, embassies, and organizations to bring Mithila culture into global conversations — advocating for its formal recognition and expanding its global footprint.

  • Social Responsibility

    Social Responsibility

We use the power of Mithila art to spark meaningful conversations around sustainability, gender equality, education, and human rights. Art that has always carried social meaning now carries it forward into the most pressing issues of our time.

The Grand Vision

Museum of Mithila Heritage, New York

At the heart of our long-term vision stands the Museum of Mithila Heritage, New York — a permanent, world-class cultural institution dedicated entirely to the art, history, and living traditions of the Mithila region. It will be the first of its kind outside of South Asia.

The museum will serve as a permanent home for Mithila art and artifacts, a center for cultural education and community programming, a platform for international exchange, and an institution that bridges South Asian heritage with the broader world. It is the most ambitious expression of our mission — and it is achievable with the support of our community.
