Our Story

Mithila Center USA was established to preserve, celebrate, and promote the rich heritage of Mithila — the cultural region spanning parts of northern Bihar, India and the Terai of Nepal. Rooted in the traditions of Janakpur and the wider Mithila region, the organization was created to give Mithila culture a meaningful platform in the United States and beyond.

What began as a cultural initiative has grown into a broader movement that connects artists, families, youth, and communities across Nepal, India, and the diaspora. Through exhibitions, festivals, workshops, and public programs, Mithila Center USA has helped bring Mithila heritage into community spaces, civic venues, and international platforms.

The organization believes Mithila culture is a living tradition — expressed through art, rituals, storytelling, language, and collective identity. Its work is centered on preserving that legacy with authenticity while ensuring it remains relevant and accessible for future generations.

Mission & Vision

Mission

Mithila Center USA is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and advancing authentic Mithila heritage through art, education, cultural programming, and community engagement. It works to support artists, strengthen cultural identity, and create opportunities for younger generations to connect with their roots.

The organization also uses Mithila art as a platform for awareness and dialogue around global issues, including sustainability, education, equality, and social responsibility.

Vision

Our vision is to become a globally respected platform for Mithila heritage — one that protects tradition, inspires learning, supports artists, and expands the global presence of Mithila culture. We envision a future where Mithila art and cultural knowledge are preserved with integrity, passed to future generations, and represented in public, educational, and international spaces with pride.

We strive to build an institution — the Museum of Mithila Heritage, New York — that will serve as a permanent cultural home for the Mithila community and a bridge between South Asian heritage and the broader world.
