I. Mithila Center USA Initiative
Art for SDGs: The Mithila Heritage
One of Mithila Center USA's most important cultural initiatives — connecting the timeless visual language of Mithila art with the global priorities of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. From a landmark inaugural exhibition at the United Nations in 2019 to an expanding annual series, Art for SDGs has brought Mithila heritage to the world stage while keeping it rooted in its community.
Through exhibitions, artist collaborations, youth workshops, and international cultural platforms, this initiative has helped expand the relevance of Mithila heritage far beyond conventional gallery spaces — positioning traditional art as a living language for global dialogue.
A Unique Approach
Heritage Meets Global Purpose
What makes Art for SDGs distinctive is its refusal to treat the Sustainable Development Goals as abstract policy themes. Instead, it interprets them through a traditional art form that already carries deep symbolism related to nature, family, dignity, spirituality, harmony, and social life — making global issues more relatable and visually engaging for communities, families, students, and international audiences alike.
The foundation of this initiative is rooted in the artistic traditions of Janakpur and the wider Mithila region. It draws from the visual symbolism, spiritual depth, ecological motifs, and narrative richness that have long defined Mithila art. At the same time, it creates opportunities for these traditions to speak to global audiences in contemporary contexts — a balance between authenticity and innovation that makes the initiative both culturally grounded and internationally meaningful.

-
A Stronger Global Bridge
It has created a stronger bridge between artists in Nepal, India, and the diaspora — allowing traditional knowledge to travel to new audiences while remaining rooted in its original cultural context. This transnational platform reflects the living and evolving identity of Mithila heritage.
Annual SDG Series
